"Special training: this is how you punch Parkinson's.
The initiative starts in Florence with the 'Un gancio al Parkinson' association. A unique training programme with gloves has already shown the first results. And now the method aims to grow in the rest of Italy.
It might seem nonsensical that Parkinson's patients fight the disease by training at the bag with gloves.
Boxers are the ones most susceptible to the disease: Muhammad Ali apparently received more than 250,000 blows to the head that caused Parkinson's disease.
Yet the first time I saw people suffering from this disease 'using their fists' with a specific programme was in the historic and beautiful Brooklyn gym, the oldest in the United States, where boxers of the calibre of Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson trained,' says Maurizio Bertoni, president of the 'Un Gancio al Parkinson' association and medical director of the gym. Florence Training Lab where classes are held.
Back from the US, Bertoni, together with a group of researchers and in collaboration with American universities, initiated the project in Italy and developed two studies that demonstrate the positive effects of boxing training for parkinsonian patients."
